product|added Jan 01, 2008 3Step Chair by GAEAforms
When looked at it, one is suprised by the 5th and 6th additional legs. Suggesting an animated walking movement, Step chair seems to go 1 step forward and 2 steps backward. Trying to combine the 3 most important factors: the comfort, visual looks and production, this chair transforms the idea of a chair from a simple and usual one into an unusual and playful one. Always have to function right the seat is ergonomically molded and held by a wooden frame which then is laquered. For this reason the best material was fiberglass and production method was vacuum infusion. This thin shell allows for the chair to be really light and rigid at the same time while forming a perfect ergonomic comfort and a suprising visual looks. „Why this chair?“ was the question that started and fuelled the panel discussions „freitagsforum“ at designtransfer in Berlin where designers of various disciplines – media and graphic designers, publishers, architects, filmmakers, fashion and product designers –talked about the chair they had selected and about their attitude to design. The book gives a lively account of the conversations which are gently edited and accompanied with numerous images and informative marginalia. The podium discussions took place in 2005 and 2006 between Martin Schmitz and Heinz Emigholz, Ruedi Baur and Günter Zamp Kelp, Ed Annink and Burkhard Schmitz, Kora Kimpel and Bernard Stein, François Burkhardt and Wiel Arets, Achim Heine and Martí Guixé, Adolf Krischanitz and Hansjerg Maier -Aichen, Paul Mijksenaar and Valeska Schmidt -Thomsen, Axel Kufus and Dirk Schönberger. product|added Jan 01, 2008 IKARUS waxlamp
IKARUS is based on the idea of visualizing electricity. Therefore we decided to give its observer a chance to become aware of its own electricity consumption by the metaphoric materialization of current. Nowadays nearly everybody is depending on electric current but most of us are not aware of its endlessness. We have taken it as something granted, a ressource that was always available. In the age of globalisation, climate change and the accompanying climate catastrophes some people are starting to change their way of thinking. Electricity is something endless, ordinary, invisible and precious. A construction of stainless steel and steel is casted into the cone-shaped lampshade which consists of pure wax (paraffin) for stabilizing and holding the lampshade. A light is centrally situated inside the lamp and causes the waxskin to melt as a result of the warmth produced so that over the course of time the lampshade will liquefy from the inside to the outside and will reform itself on the surface below. In the course of the performative transformation each lamp is developing into an unique by designing its own form. Depending on the power of the lightsource, the surrounding temperatures and conditions “IKARUS” is melting faster or slower. This melting process can take till a month. The lamp is supposed to show its observer the caducity of electricity, time and space in an emotional and poetical way. Ikarus melts away and as a result changes into a critical symbol.
