City + Country Portraits ROADSPOTTER in Calgary: Axis Art GalleryAxis Contemporary Art represents professional
Canadian and International artists working in diverse media including
painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing and photography. The artists
represent distinctive artistic practices in terms of their approach,
technique, and themes. Axis invites its clients to look at the ideas
behind the work presented, the execution of those ideas, and the
quality of the finished work. Axis Contemporary Art is located in the Art Central building in downtown Calgary, a hub of art galleries and artist studios., a range of colour, the variety of art and the diversity of culture found in and around Art Central. Axis Gallery Director Rob Mabee has had a diverse career in Calgary's art and design world. Mabee studied at ACAD and graduated from the U of C in 1991 before launching into the management of a fine craft gallery and serving as the Vice President of the Alberta Potters' association. After a period as an interior decorator, Mabee became the director of the Harrison Galleries in Calgary. In 2001 along with his mother Audrey, Mabee developed Artspace Gallery and turned the upper level of a long vacated slaughterhouse into a lively mixture of fine art, live music and the cities top event space. Joining Encorp Management in 2003, Mabee leased gallery and studio spaces in the newly renovated Art Central building, which opened in downtown Calgary in November of 2004. Mabee has written articles for publications such as Magasin d'Arts and Fast Forward as well as producing graphic design and illustration for clients including Ronnie Burkett, Lunchbox Theatre and Holiday Inn. In
his spare time Mabee is an active volunteer on community boards and
committees, writes a monthly column in Avenue magazine and hosts a
