People Portraits ROADSPOTTER in Toronto: Todd Falkowsky / MotherbrandThink Canadian souvenirs mean an endless
assortment of moose figurines and flasks of maple syrup? Think again.
At this year's edition of Come Up To My Room,
the souvenir shop as we know it will be transformed from a space for
tacky trinkets into a designer showcase featuring local designers’
interpretations of affordable Canadiana. Michael Erdmann and Todd Falkowsky, of the industrial design collective Motherbrand,
first launched the idea of a designer souvenir shop last year, after
looking at the pre-existing market of mass-produced, inexpensive
Canadian keepsakes. Both felt that there was a opportunity to develop
Canadian-inspired products designed by arts and crafts students and
professionals that could be produced in bulk and remain affordable –
just like traditional souvenirs. Given the enthusiastic response, Motherbrand, in partnership with the Gladstone, decided to make this temporary shop a bit more permanent. This year, they opened the project up to artists and designers from across the country. The goal? “To fill the role of the hotel gift shop in a way that reflects the genuine interest and commitment to local at and design culture,” said Erdmann. But these “souvenirs” aren’t your run-of-the-mill maple leaf mugs and dream catchers. Instead, you’ll find Patty Johnson’s maple leaf-shaped toy tops crafted from maple wood (shown); silver antler rings by Anneke van Bommel; or even dolls with former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s face silkscreened on them wearing a variety of outfits by Ola Rahatka. In addition to the fully operational Souvenir Shop, which will be installed in room 312 during CUTMR, the products will also be available year round through the hotel’s front desk (where they will be displayed), in in-room catalogues and the online store – www.thesouvenirshop.ca. Audience, conceived by rAndom International, is an installation consisting of around 64 head-size mirror objects. Each object moves its head in a particular way to give it different characteristics of human behaviour. Some chat amongst themselves, some shy away and others confidently move to grab your attention. |
