Human Enrichment

Human Enrichment brings design into captive animal adoption, aiming to convey that resolved design can further engagement in conservation. Domestic products present a distant animal's life in real time to an adopter, creating new links between human and animal. A model enclosure visualises the animal's location for the user to observe its activity; an audio stream glimpses the animal's sounds, and what it hears; and a text-feed lets animal workers pass on anecdotes about their work and animal.

Designer: Callum Brown (United Kingdom)
Inspired By: User insights, animals at Edinburgh Zoo, Sam Hecht's 'City in a Bag', Lehanneur's 'Efficient Home'.
Material: MDF, Acrylic, Beech, Steel, Aluminium,
