Four signs. The sun, the moon, the thunder and „Usins” (Latvian legendary character). These are signs, which served to old-latvians as a light source, light carrier and protection from evil.
They always are in people`s weekday, in important works and events. Even today people need to have a sign and the presence of light, belief in good and light.
Nowadays, the candle is a ritual accessory and it is used for all important events.
