LIGHT & SHADE

The idea of ‘painting with fabric’ led to the development of this technique where the portrait image is created through the intricate pleating and pressing of a single length of tulle fabric.

The technique aims to utilise the translucent qualities of the tulle fabric to generate various gradients, tones and textures.

Designer: Benjamin Shine
Material: Single length of back tulle fabric
Dimension: 3ft x 4ft

ACROSS

The idea of using lengths of fabric like thread, allowing the physical line to extend out of a ‘canvas’ and into another - as it momentarily disconnects from the piece and interacts with the external environment.

Designer: Benjamin Shine
Material: Leather and suede stitched through marble
Dimension: 55cm x 155cm

PORTRAIT OF SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL

The idea of ‘painting with fabric’ led to the development of this mixed-media technique. The portrait image is created through the combination of materials alone, without the use of paint.

Torn lengths of fabric are woven through thousands of eyelets, which are screwed into the back panel. The image is then built up like a dot-to-dot allowing the combinations of colours and textures to create the effect.

The idea of ‘painting with fabric’ led to the development of this mixed-media technique. The portrait image is created through the combination of materials alone, without the use of paint.

Torn lengths of net fabric are woven through thousands of eyelets, which are screwed into the back panel. The image is then built up like a dot-to-dot allowing the combinations of colours and textures to create the effect.

CHANGING STATES

Torn lengths of fabric from a single retired US flag are woven through a mesh panel. It seemed appropriate to use the nations flag, reconfigured to reflect the positive notions of change and the aspirations to 'rebuild the United States'.

The portrait was unveiled at the New York Museum of Arts and Design on Inauguration Day 2009. The image became the official commemorative image for Barnes and Noble throughout the US on various products including T-shirts, posters, puzzles and mugs.

Designer: Benjamin Shine
Material: Single decommissioned US flag
Colours: red, white and blue
Dimension: 4ft x 6ft

LANDSCAPE

Designed for Capital Hill in Canberra, Australia to celebrate the capital’s centenary, Landscape aims to honor and celebrate both the natural beauty of Australia and the creative vision behind the city’s design. With the ‘paintbrush’ symbolising human creativity, the sculpture is constructed from over 25,000 cast bronze paintbrushes in the form of a hand painting the living backdrop – directing the eye to the environment at large whilst representing the community who built the city together.

Designer: Benjamin Shine
Material: Cast Bronze
Dimension: 10m x 8.5m x 8.5m

CORDZ in use

Since it's launch in 2007, many excellent Cordz artworks have been created by children all over the world - as well as some fun promotional pieces too. These show the versatility of Cordz and the imagination it inspires.

Designer: Benjamin Shine (United Kingdom)

CORDZ

Developed from the portrait concept of 'painting with fabric', Cordz is a versatile and reusable creative range for children. Assorted lengths of coloured cord can be applied by hand or via the stylus to the low-profile hook surface, which grips the cord. Mistakes can be easily fixed by lifting the cord away or completely removed to start a new picture.

Cordz is a patented product.

PYRAMID

Pyramid focuses on the humble cushion as the key visual form. A transparent acrylic plinth displays the cushion, which provides the overriding colour, texture and pattern of the chair at large.

Designed with removable cushion covers, the versatile Pyramid range is easily adapted to suite specific interior schemes.

Material: Acrylic

40 WINKS

40 Winks plays on the relationship between ‘chair’ and ‘sitter’, whereby the chair’s role as an object in which to sit or sometimes doze-off, becomes visually interpreted through the literal and surreal form of a figure, sitting, slumped back and relaxed.

By itself the chair appears inhabited but on a larger scale, a group of these chairs appear to populate and inhabit an environment.

Exhibited during London Design Week at Aquascutum, Regent Street, 2008.

Designer: Benjamin Shine (United Kingdom)
Material: Translucent acrylic

SWITCH BAG

The idea of providing a more versatile alternative to the conventional non-woven supermarket grocery bag: Often, when grocery shopping is not planned, plastic bags are also used.

SWITCH BAG provides a streamline shoulder bag for everyday use that can be converted, via a single zip - into a large grocery bag with two inner pockets. Storing the shoulder strap inside the bag provides an alternative neat briefcase option.

Designer: Benjamin Shine (United Kingdom)
Material: Jute (shown). Various fabric options.

RUCJAK

Designed for the Well-Fashioned: Eco Style in the UK exhibition by the Crafts Council, 2006, RUCJAK takes the form of a jacket, able to transform into a fully functional rucksack via a series of concealed zips.

Designer: Benjamin Shine
Inspired By: Travel and multifunction

Skoody

Designed to combat unpredictable weather, the Skoody provides a lightweight fleece scarf that can open into a warm hooded top - or be reversed into a showerproof jacket if it rains.

Thin fabrics ensure the scarf remains both thin and light. In use, the hooded-top format is returned to the scarf by rolling up the torso section and folding the hood inside.

The Skoody has been utilised by brands including Google, Coca Cola and Arsenal Football club.

Designer: Benjamin Shine (United Kingdom)
Manufacturer: ADM (United Kingdom)
Material: Microfleece and PU coated nylon
