Brainwave

Inspired by the rich, colourful, natural forms found in marine life. The texture and glow of coral reefs and other sea creatures have influenced pieces like ‘Brainwave’, which explores the fine balance between the struggle for survival faced by the undersea coral beds and the impact of industrial pollution on such environments.

Unititled

The examples shown here are effectively created through hand carving a twin coloured blown form through a method of arduous grinding and multiple stages of hand polishing. Throughout this long process it is vital that I stop and observe the shape and contour of the composition regularly, sometimes moving away and returning to it later in order to capture some of the possibilities the form itself is presenting. For this reason alone no piece can be repeated.

Fruitful

Fruitful explores the pregnant form and germination, that the appendage can be separate, yet still part of the whole. Forming an object from the inside out, I try to suggest a process of transformation.

I case translucent colours with opaque white glass, as I am drawn to the translucent properties of glass, rather than transparency.

Alfred's Mirror

This piece was inspired by a life-long fascination with The Alfred Jewel in the Ashmolean Museum. Oxford. As a child I was intrigued by the way the enamel image of King Alfred the Great was buried beneath a layer of polished crystal and the filigree metal framing that held the jewel in place.

It took many years for my own work to develop to the point where I finally recognised, and celebrated my debt to the original.

Open Form with White Fissure plus Copper and Glass Inclusions

In this piece the design and colour makes references to aspects of landscape; utilising more natural colours and basic elements of glass.

The glass bowl sits upon a ceramic, raku - fired stand. I like the idea of bringing two high temperature kiln - formed products together to unite as one piece. This feels fitting because in my working process most pieces begin their life as ceramic ‘drawings’ and models.

Self-Contained Spray

Fabricated using a complex range of glass working methodologies. Using the 'graal' technique in which a glass bubble is blown, sandblasted and hand-painted with high fire enamels, the graal portraying the chosen imagery is brought up to a peak temperature in a kiln, re-attached to a blow pipe and encased in glass.

Hummingbirds, Garden of Orchards

The unique piece I have created is part of the exclusive "secret garden series and is titled the the Humming Birds Garden of Orchids.
The piece incorporates the use of four colours, with an inside colour casing of ruby and outside casing of green , white and amethyst.
The vase has been sandblasted through the surface in sections, acid dipped and diamond engraved in fine detail to depict two humming birds in a garden of trailing orchids.
