The Bunkie Co.
Mad River Chalet
The owner of this Devil’s Glen Ski Resort chalet was determined to honour the original structure built by his father. At the same time, a growing family created the need for an amplified space. The design for the enlarged chalet attempts to incorporate proportions and angles from the original structure while simultaneously taking cues from the challenging mountain site. Stonework and timber beams create a framework for expansive glazing that affords sweeping views to the mountain, snow and sky.
Designer: Nathan Buhler (Canada)
The Bunkie is a collaboration between Evan Bare of 608 Design and Nathan Buhler of BLDG Workshop. It began as an experiment in ideas that cross boundaries between architecture and furniture design. The interior was designed to maximize space and consists of 3 modes: Sleep, Play & Open. Sleep is two murphy beds. Play is a table and chairs that are visually integrated into the main wall. Open provides space for yoga or even ice fishing.
