Videonale

Videonale Bonn grants a comprehensive insight both in the contemporary art practice and in the current debates of video art. It holds multifaceted fringe events that frame the festival and the exhibition. These include a symposium with panel discussion, workshops, performances, presentations by art academies and art educational programs.

FESTIVALFrom its foundation in 1984, Videonale was not only a platform for an art form, considered at that time to be young, but especially for young artists.

Marcel Odenbach, Ulrike Rosenbach, Woody Vasulka, Gary Hill and Dara Birnbaum are only a few names of artists who, during the starting phases of their careers presented their works at Videonale to the general public and today are counted as worldwide renowned artists.

25 years of VIDEONALE - the retrospective exhibition being held in conjunction with VIDEONALE 12, presents a forward-looking retrospective. Curators Susanne Hinrichs and Georg Elben have selected from each of the previous VIDEONALE competitions a work representative of the year's competition. In the exhibition, this historical work is compared with a current video by the artist concerned, resulting in a history of video art which pays tribute to the rapid development of technology in a complex, globalised world.

"A glance at 25 years of the VIDEONALE makes clear the extent to which the Festival has its finger on the pulse of the time. Many of the video artists, less well-known 20 or 25 years ago, are today internationally recognised. Seeing their latest work in comparison with earlier works can show how much topics, techniques and formal working methods have changed, remained constant, or still deal with similar questions", according to Susanne Hinrichs.
The presentation of selected video works from the international competition in the Kunstmuseum Bonn is complemented by the special exhibition REVIEW.
