CHAOS almost finished at The Custard Factory

Chaos is the brainchild of Bennie Grey who commissioned Philip Watts Design to put his thoughts into reality. Bennie Grey is an exciting, creative maverick developer and master planner.Philip Watts Design, designed the sculpture which is the centre piece of a courtyard in the Zellig part of The Custard Factory, the newest addition to the creative space in Birmingham. The sculpture which is over 5 stories high is the single biggest commission ever undertaken by Philip Watts Design.  Chaos uses around 3 miles of steel tubing which has been sprayed white and is  punctuated with three T shape glass walkways and is punctuated by over 5 stories high

Entitled 'Chaos', it is located in Zellig the latest part of the Custard factory arts and media centre in Birmingham. Zellig provides an inspiring, entertaining and commercially fertile environment for one hundred and one independent creative enterprises.

ZELLIG is not only beautiful – it is also efficient and congenial. Throw in high design and an exciting sense of almost tribal community and we believe that this heady mix may well help to redefine the workplace of the future. Here your business won’t just shelter from the storm – it will flourish in the golden age of the entrepreneur that lies ahead.

Who are Philip Watts Design?

Phil’s philosophy is “design should be a story, it should have a beginning, a middle and an end, and if it’s really good a punch line”

Early products included various cast aluminium candlesticks and handmade furniture, much of which were created in a converted shed in Phil’s back garden, and lovely as his garden is, it is no longer our company headquarters; an old warehouse has been converted into a design studio, workshop and showroom.

Interiors are very often object or feature based; and the Philip Watts Design name is now synonymous with dramatic three-dimensional staircases in both bars restaurants and private homes. They may be sculptural cast aluminium spinal forms or minimal glass and stainless steel; the impact is always the same, breath taking.

As commissioned work became more architectural, so our product range evolved to the contract interior market. One of our most famous products is the Porthole for Doors, a product that we have made almost iconographic within the landscape of the contemporary bar and restaurant scene.

Other imaginative innovative ironmongery that we have developed includes handles, push and pull plates, kick plates, signage and stair nosings in a variety of finishes. Bathware was added to the product range in 2003/4, and two products have so far received design awards. The designer urinal ‘Spoon’ received the FX Best Product for Leisure Environment in 2004 and the sculptural ‘Sonk’ sink an Interior Design award from ADEX for it’s curvaceous form. GLOO, a glowing urinal, was added in 2007 and has been very well received.

In 2008 Blimpy flew into view, our first foray into lighting. Blimpy is a rotationally moulded plastic light, which comes in white orange or red, and can be hung in one of three ways. Blimpy is versatile, practical and humorous. As the range of push and pull handles has been so successful, we have complimented the range with a selection of lever handles. Precision engineered in stainless steel, the five handles are both beautiful and functional.

Brand new for 2009 and showcased at 100% Design London, the company has produced a beautiful sister product to the Spoon Urinal. The Spoon Sink also has flowing lines but is even more graceful than its sibling. The basin, like the urinal, is made from a resin composite and is 100% UK manufactured. There has been a huge advanced interest in this product, which is set to take the commercial and interior bathroom world by storm. The design and build mentality has helped to push the interior side of the business forward with increasingly challenging projects and installations.

Throughout the years we have played an increasingly pivotal role in the delivery of interior schemes for small and national restauranteurs and bar owners. Our talented teams of designers are capable of working from initial design brief through to completed unit. Notable clients include YO! Sushi, EGO Restaurants and Le Bistrot Pierre. In 2007, Philip Watts Design was named Interior Design Practice of the Year at the annual FX International Interior Design Awards. This coveted award holds a special place for the team as it was voted for by peers within the design industry, and led to Philip becoming a judge for the awards in 2008 & 2009
