Rheinauhafen Cologne

The three "Kranhäuser" (Crane Houses) in Cologne's Rheinauhafen present a free interpretation of El Lissitzkys' 1924 "Wolkenbuegel" and a new typology of high-rise building.

The newly completed "Kranhaus 1" offers the public not just a classical plaza in front of a cubic tower. The pure cube is far more sculpturally resolved and realizes its full volume beyond the ninth floor as a slender 70 meter long
horizontal projection and not as a vertical tower. The promenade leads straight
through the middle of the building.

With its dynamic shape and its association with the historical cranes in the former harbour area, the "Kranhäuser" stand as a symbol for the architectural commitment of the city at the water.

Science gets on tracks

This year, a science exhibition in a show train will be touring Germany. The 300 metre long Science Express starts its seven month journey to more than 60 cities in Berlin on April 23rd. Twelve carriages showcase cutting edge science and technology in todays groundbreaking fields including nanotechnology, life sciences or sustainable energy research.

The Pritzker Architecture Prize 2009

Peter Zumthor of Switzerland has been chosen as the 2009 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The formal ceremony for what has come to be known throughout the world as architectures highest honor will be held on May 29 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. At that time, a $100,000 grant and a bronze medallion will be bestowed on the 65-year old architect.

In many cultures it is an old tradition to live on house boats. Many people feel the need to live close to water. A house boat is fixed in place and can be a permanent home. In areas with big water surfaces or in cities where property costs are high house boats offer an alternative.

It is important to us that we do not design block houses. We try to give our homes the right balance between design and maritime romanticism. The choice of material plays a big role.

Although design is only half as popular as love, compared with Barack Obama or David Beckham it is very high up on the international popularity scale. This, at least, is the result yielded by the international search engines in the world wide web. Design is also currently a hot topic for many manufacturers worldwide, who hope to reanimate their share prices with the help of good design.
